Changing your name when getting married
Last updated 15 October 2026
·When you get married or form a civil partnership in Northern Ireland, you can take your spouse's surname, keep your own name or choose a new one.
Depending on the name you choose, you can use your marriage certificate or you will need a deed poll. A deed poll is a legal document that changes your name.
Taking your spouse's surname
You do not need a deed poll to take your spouse's surname. Your marriage certificate is your proof of the change.
For example, if Sarah Jones marries David Smith, she can become Sarah Smith using her marriage certificate. David can also become David Jones in the same way.
You will need an official copy of your marriage certificate. You can order copies from the registration office where you married.
Keeping your own name
You do not have to change your name when you marry. You do not need to tell anyone or provide any documents.
Double-barrelled surnames
You can combine your surnames, with or without a hyphen, in either order. For example, Sarah Jones and David Smith could become Jones-Smith or Smith-Jones.
HM Passport Office accepts a marriage certificate for a double-barrelled surname made from both your surnames. Some other organisations, such as banks, may ask for a deed poll instead.
Other name changes
You need a deed poll if you want to:
- choose a new surname together
- blend your surnames into a new name
- change your first or middle names
If you both change your surname, you each need your own deed poll.
It costs £25 to apply for a deed poll with the NI Deed Poll Office.
Changing your name before the wedding
You can change your name by deed poll at any time, including before the wedding. Some people do this so they can use their new name on the day.
If you are using your marriage certificate, you need to wait until after the wedding.
Updating your records
Once you have changed your name, you need to tell the organisations that hold your records. Each one will ask to see your marriage certificate or deed poll.
You can keep using your current passport until it expires. If you are travelling soon after the wedding, book your tickets in the name on your passport.
